TONIGHT’S CALL – MARK GURLEY ON REVIVALS IN AMERICA!!!

What is revival? It is the the awakening or quickening of God’s people to their true nature and purpose. Revival happens when God’s people are prepared. It happens when we are ready for it with tender hearts and humble spirits. We can’t orchestrate widespread far-reaching revivals, that’s God’s work. Revival often begins with people coming under deep conviction and crying out in confession and repentance for their sins. Before there can be a revival in the church, there must first be a revival on an individual level. Revival starts with us personally. It starts with me…point the finger at ourselves. It starts with realizing that God wants to revive each of us personally.

Revivals don’t last forever. They have a beginning, a middle and an end. A revival is a little bit like an explosion, like a starting car. But then sometimes we lose sight of it, and we need another revival and then another one. May we continue our appeals to heaven on behalf of the church and ourselves.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REVIVAL AND AWAKENING?

The words revival and awakening are often used interchangeably, but there is a distinction. An AWAKENING takes place when God sovereignty pours out his Spirit and it impacts a culture. That is what happened during the Jesus Revolution, and it’s what happened in multiple spiritual awakenings in the history of the United States, predating its establishment as a nation. Spiritual awakening, that outpouring of the Spirit, is up to God. We can’t organize it, but we can agonize for it in prayer and call upon God to send it.

A REVIVAL, on the other hand, is what the church must experience. It’s when the church comes back to life, when the church becomes what it was always meant to be. It’s a return to passion. I think many times we overly mystify the idea of revival, but we don’t really need to. Another word we could use for revival is restoration – restoring something to its original condition.

IMPORTANT: Here is what it comes down to: America needs a spiritual awakening. And the church needs a revival.

“Nevertheless, I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.” (Revelation 2: 4-5)

“Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.” (1 Kings 18:37)
