THE END TIME PRAYER MOVEMENT – DEAN BRIGGS

“And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar

before the throne, and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel.” – (Revelation. 8:3-4)

Unprecedented Prayer

Let’s try to move together from ground level to a 50,000 foot view of what God is doing with prayer across the earth and across time. Over the past 20+ years, the Lord has dynamically and creatively raised a global prayer movement the likes of which history has never witnessed. We have many notable and inspiring examples of sustained night-and-day prayer, some lasting for decades and even centuries: Alexander Akimites and the Sleepless Ones (at the mouth of the Black Sea in the 400s AD), or Bangor, Ireland under Comgall in the late 500s AD, or the Moravians in Herrnhut, Germany (1700s).

Stunning as these were, they were extremely isolated geographically. By metrics of global scale, coordination within movements, diversity of movements, numbers of peoples, numbers of “houses of prayer” and hours of cumulative daily prayer (24-hour phone chains, Zoom calls, “live in the room” etc), along with saturation of messaging and normalizing of the value of prayer within the wider Body of Christ, we are living in truly historic days. The nation of Indonesia alone — the most populous Muslim nation on earth — has literally thousands of Christians “prayer towers” filled with intercessors praying around the clock. This is stunning, and nothing less than eschatological in its implications.

Transitioning to the Age to Come

Consider the layout of the tabernacle of Moses above as a sort of map of the chronological progression of history. From BC to Calvary, we enter the time of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. From that time to now, the Body of Christ has corporately walked with God and lived in the many beautiful experiences, glories, and limitations of the Holy Place. But there is another realm we must enter. The final transition from 2000 years of church experience in the Holy Place is to move from the realm where God fills His people to the greater dimension of His total, abiding, undiminished Presence. In a limited but very real sense, the High Priest marked this transition with the smoke of incense. Smoke had to fill the air so that when the Priest moved into the Holy of Holies, he could not directly behold God, lest he die. Said another way, the smoke of incense permitted the priest to enter an otherwise unobtainable place: the most powerful, intimate encounter possible with God under the Old Covenant.

Thus, in the sovereign brilliance of God, viewing the Tabernacle floorplan as Time, the Altar of Incense can be recognized as the last stage, the final transition before the age to come. Almost like the curtain on a play, the veil separating the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies must open to reveal man’s final destiny: full transformation and undiminished communion with God. If you have ears to hear, this email will powerfully encourage you and add so much meaning and focus to your life as an intercessor.

Why? Here are two important takeaways:

Incense is a physical symbol of prayer in Scripture. Psa. 141:2 says, “Let my prayer be counted as incense before you” and Rev. 5:8 describes the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders…”each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.” The people of Israel understood this connection because they would all pray “at the hour of incense” (Luke 1:10).
We live under a better covenant with direct fellowship and no veil. Moses wore a veil to hide from Israel the passing glory of the Old Covenant, destined to be replaced by the better covenant of Christ. This is like the veil in the Mosaic Tabernacle and Temple, forever torn, top to bottom, by the finished work of Jesus on the Cross. “For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains un-lifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another” (2 Cor. 3:14-18). Using the tabernacle motif, God is telling a story that operates on at least two levels of insight: relational and historical. Relationally, the veil has been removed. Kaput! It is finished! We must bear this confidence in our intercession or condemnation and shame will hinder us. We will not wield the full measure of authority He has put in our hands because we will fear to enter in. We will be outer court intercessors, always striving to get to a place we already have full permission to enter. We will say, “The heavens are brass!” when really our soul is brass through the hardening power of unbelief and shame. Jesus tore that veil, but the spirit of religion can stitch it up again in your heart and make you a beggar in the house of God. Fullness of Christ in our own life means we must become New Covenant intercessors.

Instead, by faith, we are invited to radically believe the grace He has made available to us. Because you and I — each of us — come to a throne of grace, therefore, boldly come! (Heb. 4:16). We don’t have to jump through hoops and veils! If you have been brought under the blood of Christ, your debts are settled. You live in fellowship with God, you do not pray to gain it. On the other hand, historically, I believe the Holy Spirit is indicating a great and final “stage” or “movement” of prayer before the corporate purpose of God in His people is finalized and we are ushered into the age to come.

Not Just a Little Smoke

Which brings us to the mechanism of the altar of incense. The instructions for the high priest specified that he “put the incense on the fire before the LORD” —why? to create a mystical atmosphere? to have a sweet 1970s hippie smell in the room? no! — “that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony, so that he does not die” (Lev. 16:13). In other words, if I’m the high priest, I am in no hurry to rush in! Rather, I’m going to take my time tending that censer and let a lot of incense burn. I want a lot of smoke to waft all over the place! I am in no hurry to behold what I am not prepared to witness.

So the air was to be filled with smoke, thick with smoke. Almost so much that you could not see. Only then was it safe to enter, because under the Old Covenant, “No man can see me and live” (Exo. 33:20). This fearful system was necessary due to the limited atoning power of the old covenant. Hebrews says this system was “imposed until the time of reformation” (Heb. 9:10).

BUT!

“When Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. (Hebrews 9:11-12).

In other words, Jesus brought the promised reformation. The rules have totally changed. You now live under the Melchizedek priesthood of Christ. You are a son, a daughter, an intercessor. You carry the fear of the Lord within you, so you do not have to fear His presence anymore. In fact, it is only when you see Him that you live!

A lot of smoke needs to fill the earth…and it is!

In Isaiah 6:1-4, the prophet records a dramatic “re-centering” encounter with God. King Uzziah had been a great and righteous reformer in Judah (one of the few). He had a long, illustrious reign (52 years) and everyone was hopeful that he would be the one to fully restore Israel to its Solomonic glory. At a human level, even the prophets could not help but emotionally invest in that hope. When he died, it was a crushing blow to everyone, particularly Isaiah. Therefore I say it was a re-centering moment. Isaiah had put his hopes on a man, and the Lord needed to recenter him around a bigger revelation. So it was in the year that King Uzziah died that Isaiah “saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.” He goes on to describe seraphim with eyes and wings crying out “Holy, Holy, Holy!” to the Lord. Furthermore, these mighty, beautiful seraphim proclaim that the “the whole earth is filled with His glory!”

It is in this context that Isaiah sees and says this: “The foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.”

Isaiah sees the temple in heaven where God dwells in eternal splendor filled with smoke. Now the temple on earth is a picture of that reality, but you are a picture of the temple God desires above any work of stone. You have the privilege on earth of filling your temple with smoke. You have the privilege not just of personal prayer, but of legislative intercession with groups of two or three, multiplied by millions all of the earth. When we give ourselves to this mission, we nudge history’s final transition forward. Isaiah glimpse of the glory of the Lord covering the earth was an eschatological revelation pointing to the progression of time right up to the final hours of history. And smoke was everywhere.

The Incense Hour of History

Friends, we are at the Altar of Incense, an hour of history. The temple of history must fill with smoke. The Day of the Lord is at hand. For 20+ years, the atmosphere of earth has been thickening with the burning incense of the saints in unprecedented measure. I believe this not only mirrors the reality Isaiah witnessed but is also helping to create it as well. We know the twenty-four elders and four living creatures are presently carrying bowls of incense and prayer, but three chapters later in Revelation 8:4-5, we then see “the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, (rising) before God from the hand of the angel.” Surely this points to a time of massive prayer filling the earth! So at this particular time in history, a time of rising intercession, “the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.”

Our prayer ascends, which God then mingles with fire. God adds His extra divine element. We must do our part, but in the end human strength will never accomplish the full divine purpose. Yet God is faithful! So at some point, He seems to say, “Enough!” The temple of earth is full of smoke. In prayer, we add our yes and amen to the promises of God, but here it seems God instructs the angel to add heaven’s yes and amen to our intercession. And the earth shakes under the glory that is released.

Even as Isaiah prophetically saw a time when the kingship of man gives way to the kingship of Christ, there will be more shakings, more earthquakes. Everything that can be shaken, will be shaken. But take heart! This is the very time when “the house of God will be filled with smoke.”

If it is filling in heaven, I believe it is because it is filling on earth. If it is filling on earth, I believe it is because heaven is drawing near.

Putting these truths together — the dual understanding of the veil of Moses and the veil of the tabernacle relative to the covenants they represent, and the place of the altar of incense in the progressive stage so the Tabernacle — helps us understand that we can personally approach prayer from a very different, superior place to the Levitical priests. Nevertheless, the message embedded as a picture of the progression of time remains massive prayer precedes our corporate access to the last days transition to the age to come.
