Tonight’s Call – THE EARTH IS HIS FOOTSTOOL – BEHOLD HE COMES!

What is a footstool? It is something like a low stool, placed under the feet of the sitting person so that the person’s feet may rest comfortably on it. Another word for footstool is ottoman. It can phase the thinking that God is not stressed at what is manifesting on the earth because he has everything under control. He will know when to get up and give Divine directives to bring earth into balance. In Genesis 6 is a time during Noah’s flood where he did such a thing. He is not wringing his hands in heaven and expects us not to as well. Yes, everything is breaking apart, but this is why God through his son Jesus Christ is our anchor. We are now allowed to worship at God’s footstool. It is all because of what Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross.

The footstool is a humble piece of furniture. It is rarely expensive or flashy and is often overlooked. As we said earlier, it is a place to rest one’s feet. Jesus refers to the earth as God’s footstool. In Bible times, being near feet or having to touch feet was dishonorable. Feet were dirty and cleaning them was the job of the Lord’s servant. To be at a place near someone’s feet, and a footstool for example, was humbling. That’s why it was so startling when Jesus washed the disciples’ feet (John 13:4-5). So, it is a humbling place and God promised to make our enemies a footstool for our feet. All those who reject Jesus today and work against His purposes will one day be humbled at His feet (Philippians 2:9-11). Again, the footstool in the Bible is a symbol of loneliness, humility, and on importance. It signifies that the one using the footstool is far superior to the footstool itself. It’s amazing that, while God calls the earth His footstool, He still humbled Himself and took on human flesh to become One who lived on that footstool. And He requires that kind of meekness and humility in each of his followers.

“Thus says the Lord: Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool. Where is the house that you will build me? And where is the place of my rest?” (Isaiah 66:1)

“The Lord says to my Lord, sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” (Psalm 110:1)

Our culture loves specialists. We don’t just go to the doctor, we go to the endocrinologist, the dermatologist, or the podiatrist. We seek out experts in other areas of life too. We asked an interior designer for help in updating the old home we just bought. We asked the nutritionist about recipes. We secure the services of a strength and conditioning coach for our child with athletic promise. We make appointments with tutors who can prepare our high school students to do well on the SAT or ACT exam. Specialists are awesome, so long as a stick to what they know. The problem is, no one can specialize in everything. No one, that is, but God.

Imagine all the expertise of one specialist multiplied by however many facets of life there are. Imagine knowing everything that can be known. That’s the God we serve. He knows how to split atoms and how to measure the universe. He knows which spice brings out the flavor of one vegetable, not to mention the mechanics of the perfect baseball swing. God has complete knowledge of all subjects, all disciplines, and all fields. But he possesses more than just factual, encyclopedic information. The God of knowledge is also fully aware of all fluid situations. At any given moment, He knows how many hairs are on your head (Luke 12:7) and when and where a sickly sparrow falls to the earth (Matthew 10:29).

Such perfect knowledge (Job 36:4) means nothing is hidden from God’s sight. As Adam and Eve discovered in the garden of Eden after they ate from the tree, they hoped would give them all knowledge, God was cognizant of all they had done, demonstrating the infinite contrast between human knowledge and God’s perfect knowledge. When we bow to the truth of God’s perfect, ultimate knowledge, we can put our faith in the fact that He knows what is best for us. God can investigate our past and into our future and tell us the best path to follow.

QUESTION: In what ways do you sometimes doubt God’ knowledge?

“Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by Him deeds are weighed.” (1 Samuel 2:3)
