DAY 1496 DECEMBER 9… GOVERNMENT: OUR GOD REIGNS!
According to the Bible, God establishes government to promote good, punish evil, and maintain peace. The Bible says that all authority comes from God, and that those in power are God’s servants and ministers. The Bible also says that the purpose of government is to exercise justice, which means giving each person what they are due. Romans 13 opens like this: “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God” (Rom 13:1).God Instituted Government for His Glory. All things exist under the sovereignty of God and serve not only the good of people but also God’s ultimate purpose to bring glory to his name.
The first and most primary responsibility of the government is to uphold the law and to punish the lawbreaker. To put it positively, the government’s God-given task is to protect the life and the possessions of its citizens. God institutes governments to keep the peace, exact justice, and protect its citizenry. This is the primary role of a government, and so Christians are called to live good lives as peacemakers, which glorifies God (see 1 Peter 2:12, Romans 13:1-7). The five biblical obligations of government are protection, justice, promotion of the common good, securing rights and liberties, and facilitating cooperation and trade
CHURCH RESPONSIBILITY
While a government may do more to serve its people, such as providing healthcare or welfare, these things are icing on the cake and do not supply the caring and compassion needed to truly serve and uplift the poor. That is a role for God’s church. America is a compassionate country because it was founded on Christian principles, but God never intended for the secular government to take over the ministry of the church. So as we think about our elections and our vote, we must consider the primary purpose of government and ask ourselves: Which candidate for office is going to keep me and my family safe?
WHAT ABOUT THE OPPRESSIVE GOVERNMENT?
If the government requires me to act against God’s will, I take my cue from the first-century Christians, who said, “God must be obeyed above Caesar.” So, if there is a conflict, I must obey God and willingly pay the price for it. This is very important, and many Christians have experienced it, having lived under a socialist dictatorship in the Middle East; the last decade in America. Have those who stood for life in the womb, traditional marriage and a Biblical worldview suffered persecution these past years?
Jesus warned us to count the cost of following Him. If we are not willing to give up everything we have, we cannot be His disciples (see Luke 14:33). He called us to have in mind the concerns of God and not merely human concerns, asking His disciples, “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?… For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done” (Matthew 16:23, 26-27). We need not fear to take a stand for Christ, for to earn the delight of the King of Kings is a reward infinitely greater than anything this world or its leaders could ever offer.
PRAY FOR THOSE IN AUTHORITY!
Our nation just has experienced a historic and Biblical shift. We must pray diligently for President Trump, his family and his appointees! Also pray for the salvation of those who have opposed the church and religious freedom.
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2)
