DEALING WITH ANGER – RANDY HEKMAN (The Grand Awakening)

One emotion virtually every one of us humans has experienced multiple times in our lives is anger. Our anger can express itself in many different forms and sizes: from a minimal sense of displeasure on one end of the spectrum to outright rage on the other end. But regardless of what type of anger we have, Scripture warns us repeatedly about the dangers that can flow from our anger. James 1:19-20 puts it this way: “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”

Is anger itself per se sin? Clearly not, since Jesus, who never sinned, at times felt anger. Certainly He was angry when He drove out the money changers from the temple. And look at this story from Mark 3:1-6, “Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched Him closely to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, ‘Stand up in front of everyone.’ Then Jesus asked them, ‘Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?’ But they remained silent. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.”

Similarly, when people were attempting to bring their children to Jesus to have Him bless them, the disciples tried to stop it from happening. How did Jesus respond? Mark 10:14 says He was “indignant” (that’s a form of anger!) to His disciples and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these . . . anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. And He took the children in His arms, placed His hands on them and blessed them.” (Mark 10:14-16) So, while Jesus was angry at times, we have no evidence that He remained angry thereafter indefinitely. Certainly, if anyone had the right to be continuously angry with sinful mankind it was our perfect Jesus! But He truly dealt very lovingly and graciously to so many–especially to those who were humble. And He does the same to us!

Brothers and sisters, there are times we too can rightly be angry at sin and its consequences. But Scripture makes it clear we are not to harbor anger in our hearts indefinitely. Look at what Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 4:26-27, “In your anger do not sin: do not let the sun go down while you are still angry and do not give the devil a foothold.” I have personally seen how when I hold onto even lower forms of anger, including bitterness and self-pity, that choice typically opens my heart’s door to the devil’s assault on me (often at night).

Friends, we are not supposed to let anger continuously brew in our hearts and minds. We are to let it go and trust our sovereign Heavenly Father to ultimately turn even our painful circumstances into something good for us. And doing that takes Jesus and the Holy Spirit in and through us, minute-by-minute, in our lives. Easy? NO WAY! But so important to do if we really want to live the true Christian life and lay up treasures in heaven. God helps each of us to choose to do it and empower us by faith to follow through, all for His glory and our joy, peace and love! Amen!

We will produce approximately a 60 – 66 page, four-color, high-gloss, 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 booklet that can be used by churches, university campuses, and individuals to promote the pro-life cause. Presently, Michigan is a death state. We can turn this around and turn Michigan into a pro-life state where it can be called pure again. The killing of the unborn is foundational to all of our state and national problems. We need to provide knowledgeable tools to be utilized to promote the life message. We will do an initial printing of 10,000 copies. We will not charge for them but give them out freely to churches, ministries, young people, and individuals across our state. We want to impact our young people especially, youth leaders in High School and universities. Of course, the body of Christ must take the lead in churches. Congregations must be activated to share with their sphere of influence. We declare it is a new day in the Pro-Life movement in Michigan! Who will rise up and defend the unborn?

TARGET AUDIENCE: Churches, pastors, ministry leaders, university students, High School students, Christians and non-Christians….pro-abortionist!
