Life: Deuteronomy 30:19-20 “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”
When reading this verse today the words “choose life that you and your children may live,“ hit me at a gut level. Initially when I chose this topic and verse I thought I would be focusing on the fact that the Lord is our Life and our everything. While that’s true as I sit here typing these words, a lump is forming in throat. These words are echoing in my ears “Choose Life, that you and YOUR CHILDREN MAY LIVE. “ Today I hear these words and I sense God’s heart screaming, STOP THROWING MY BLESSINGS AWAY! Multitudes of children are aborted every day. America has one of the highest abortion rates in the world. Three out of four women have had an abortion.
One out of ten women will have had an abortion before the age of fifteen. In 06-07 one million two hundred six thousand and two hundred babies were literally thrown away. It is a generational genocide, if you will, and this reality is ravaging the hearts of fathers and mothers as well. When we see the movie Schindler’s list we are appalled, devastated, and aghast at the reality that millions of people were being murdered, and treated so inhumanly. Yet we have the very same thing going on in our nation, millions of people being murdered every year. The only difference is that these little ones do not have a voice to speak, so the genocide continues in silence!
Over the last decade even secular psychological studies show that abortion is having devastating emotional and psychological effects on the woman(mothers) and men(fathers) who opt for abortion. I have a friend who is the president of a local pregnancy clinic that ministers to woman considering an abortion, in hopes that a simple glimpse at the living, breathing, moving child, via an ultrasound, will help the woman/couple choose life. She shared a horrifying story with me once, disclosing they had done some videotaping inside of an old abortion clinic. I can’t remember how the footage was being used, but she proceeded to share with me that when she and her colleagues entered one portion of the dilapidated clinic, they saw a room filled with massive sized garbage disposal like machines. As I heard that my mind began to put the pieces together and dreaded what she was going to tell me next. When she told me this was how they were disposing of the babies remains, my heart was filled with disgust and rage. This of course isn’t the picture they paint when abortion clinics and Dr.’s counsel young women stating that abortion is an option. It probably wouldn’t go over well to say “Well, the Dr. will do a medical procedure that removes your child from your womb and then we grind up your child in a garbage disposal to save on costs.” One thing the media doesn’t tell us is that abortion clinics are a major money making business. One of the many reasons they still thrive, is the age old spirit of greed. Help us Oh Lord!
Remember when God said to Cain: Genesis 4:3 “What have you done? Listen! YOUR BROTHER’S BLOOD CRIES OUT to me from the ground.” Certainly the innocent blood of these precious unborn children cries out to the Lord day and night. What if Christians started large scale homes willing to receive, rear, and care for unwanted children, what if we worked with mothers considering abortions to provide an alternatives that included helping them until they finish their degree, What if churches offered financial incentive for a woman who chooses adoption instead, What if we prayed for creative solutions to this self-inflicted pandemic?
Prayer: Oh Father, I am at a loss for words, my spirit cries out Juuuuuuuuustice….cooooooooooooome Lord….Heeeeeeeeeeeelp us! Father forgive us for voting in ways that allow this sin to continue, but more than that forgive us for not providing better alternatives for women who are convinced they cannot keep these children, and even more so forgive us for compromising your standards for purity. Forgive us for compromising your priorities, for putting education and career goals before obedience.
Forgive us for being greedy and making abortion a money making machine. Forgive us for this generational genocide. Please give us creative ideas strategies and willingness to collaborate across the entire body to put an end to abortion in our nation. Show us how we can provide for these little ones.
Forgive us for in fear considering abortion as an option within the church, forgive us for the times when we’ve encouraged our daughters and sons to opt for abortion to save face within the church.
Father please forgive us for allowing abortion to be considered as a necessary educational option in our schools.
Oh Father, heal the hearts of the these woman who have not chosen life, who are suffering because of the sin of abortion in their lives. Bring them forward to share the truth, the whole truth. Grace them to band together and speak the truth, so that multitudes might be saved. Help us to raise the funds to educate the public on the horrific process of abortion and the effects it has on families and the child. Grace us to lead this generation into the promise land, into all the blessings that accompany a LIFE in Christ. In Jesus Name Amen & Amen.
