TONIGHT’S CALL – MARK GURLEY…REVIVALS IN AMERICA!!!

What is the solution to all our nation’s ills? The answer is simple: we need a “GREAT AWAKENING” in America! The word awakening of course implies that the church was previously in the state of spiritual sleep or slumber and needed to be awakened. Is that the case today? Yes! How could we have allowed our culture to slip into moral depravity regarding gay and transgender issues? How could our culture begin to accept the killing of children in the womb? I personally lay the blame at the feet of the church because a state of spiritual sleep or slumber has most definitely set in. The pulpits in America must be inflamed to speak on truth and righteousness.

Let’s speak about aspects of the term Great Awakening. It refers to several periods of religious revival in American Christian history. Historians and theologians identify three, or sometimes four, waves of increased religious enthusiasm between the early 18th century and the late 20th century. The First Great Awakening was a period when spirituality and religious devotion were revived. This feeling swept through the American colonies between the 1730s and 1770s. The revival of Protestant beliefs was part of a much broader movement that was taking place in England, Scotland, and Germany at that time. What historians call “the first Great Awakening” can best be described as a revitalization of religious Biblical Worldviews that swept through the American colonies between the 1730s and the 1770s.

How were the earlier Great Awakenings triggered in our nation? The two religious’ preachers of the Great Awakening, George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards inspired the masses. Others came along like Charles Finney. They argued for religious authorities not having control over the ordinary people. The emphasis was for people to personally seek God and develop a relationship where God can move individually in the hearts and minds of people. A transformation of hearts, minds, and souls is desperately needed in our nation today.

The movement then reduced the higher authority of church doctrine and instead put greater importance on the individual and his or her spiritual experience. An important effect of the Great Awakening was the transformation of the religious climate in the American colonies. As in the colonies of yesteryear, today our culture needs a complete overhaul where God’s kingdom purposes are advanced in individual lives where we cry out and make appeals to heaven for God to save our nation.

As the Great Awakening began in New England and the Middle Colonies, where thousands converted to an evangelical faith centered on the experience of the “new birth” of salvation, could it happen today? The answer is yes! God is raising up men and women of God because of our prayers. The threshold has been crossed for a Great Awakening in America. Our time is now to enter the history books dealing with our nation. We are all being called to be part and invited for the greatest movement of God upon the face of this earth. Stay the course and hold the line!

“Therefore, He says: Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5: 14-16)

“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now, is our salvation nearer than when we believed.” (Romans 13:11)

“Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.” (1 Corinthians 15:34)
