Tonight’s Call – MARK GURLEY WITH BRAD CUMMINGS…ELECTION INSIGHTS!
Understanding the names of God in these challenging times will build and gird up our faith. No matter how difficult the path is before us we have been made adopted sons and daughters because of what Christ accomplished on the Cross. Our spiritual enemies have no concept of the advantage we have. God is ordering and directing our steps at this time. His light is the spelling of the darkness that surrounds our nation. In Matthew 25 it speaks of the 10 virgins….5 wise and 5 foolish. The wise ones had oil for their lamps while the foolish frittered away their time and did not see the calling and destiny that was before them. The foolish had not grasped the greatness of the God we serve.
“Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to 10 virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Those were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.” (Matthew 25: 1-4)
The 10 virgins represent the people who have faith in Jesus Christ and have been taught His Gospel and all the commandments they should live by and are not the rank and file of the world. The false gods of this world have not taken them off the narrow path of righteousness. Yes, five were foolish and did not have extra oil for their lamps. May we not be walking the path of the foolish as we need oil for lamps to shine brightly to be part in the exposure of the evil that is coming to the world.
The oil in the wise virgin’s lamps represents the righteous living in obedience regarding the assignment we have today. We each fill our own Lance, which represents our own life, with our obedience and righteousness. Jesus was our example! The word Gethsemane means olive press. Christ was squeezed in the garden, and He was our example and from him is available the oil of the Holy Spirit.
Have you asked for oil for your lamp today? We serve a great God where there is no other like Him. We must be prepared for his second coming of course but the very oil is what enables us to stay the course and hold the line! When things seem so dire it is when God intervenes.
“For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37)
NAMES OF GOD SERIES – CHRISTOPHER HUDSON – THE GREAT GOD – EL HAGGADOL…THERE IS NO OTHER!
Certain names have been associated with greatness. There was Alexander the Great or the great Gatsby. Boxer Mohamed Ali was known as “the greatest”, and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky was “the great one”. We typically reserve the word great to describe a unique accomplishment or status. To call someone great is to say there is only one – there has never been, nor will there ever be, another like him or her.
The Hebrew people who heard Moses speak the words of Deuteronomy 10:17 had heard often of Yahweh, the God of their father Abraham. But by that time, they had also lived for 400 years in Egypt, where multiple gods were worshiped. And now God was leading them to a land where they would be surrounded by other polytheistic peoples. What made Israel’s God unique from the rest? What, if anything, caused him to stand out from all the others? Moses argued that God deserves the Hebrews’ full devotion because he is “the great God”. The Hebrew word for great is gadol. It means distinguished, important, large, grand, magnificent. And why is God uniquely deserving of this title? Because, Moses said, He’s mighty. He’s powerful and awesome. There is nothing too hard for Him. Not only this, but unlike the petty gods of the surrounding cultures, the God of Israel is just – He is fair and gracious. That’s another reason He’s great: He doesn’t play favorites or accept bribes like a crooked earthly judge.
Deuteronomy 10:14-22 attests God’s greatness. God is great, Moses said, because he owns the universe. He’s great because He graciously set his affection on the Hebrew people. He’s great because he cares about the helpless. He’s great because He alone does awesome wonders. He’s great because He blesses undeserving people. What other god does such things? Only Yahweh, Israel’s God, the one true God, is able to hold the title of GREAT. It is blasphemous and tragic to treat anything as being greater than God. Two people give their hearts to other gods? Of course, but there is no god like the great God of Israel.
After the Hebrew people identified their God as great, Moses urged the following response from them: “Fear the Lord your God and serve him. Hold fast to him” (Deuteronomy 10:20). Because of God’s unique position, He is worthy of reverential fear and faithful service.
QUESTION: Many things vie for our devotion. Where does God the great stand in your life?
“For the Lord your God is God of god’s and the Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes” (Deuteronomy 10:17)
TIME TO PRAY IMPRECATORY PRAYERS???
IMPRECATORY PRAYER: To invoke evil upon and curse. It is to invoke judgment, calamity or curses upon one’s enemies or those perceived as the enemies of God.
The imprecations in the Psalms should be understood in light of Christ, and the New Testament. It interprets some of the imprecations of David as descriptions of the life of Christ or as prayers of Christ. Therefore, from the New Testament perspective, the psalmist enemies in imprecatory Psalms are Christ’s enemies. We can use the imprecatory Psalms as models to pray against those things that hinder the advancement of God’s kingdom in this world, such as our own sins over people who work actively to promote the harm towards God’s people or even harm towards his common grace.
Yes, we must keep in mind to pray for our enemies and those who despitefully use us. This is the most profound form of love because it requires you to truly desire that something good happens to them. Prayer for them, on the other hand, is interceding with God on their behalf. A sample prayer is “God, please fill my enemies with your grace and love. Help them to know who you are and to accept your gift of salvation.”
IMPRECATORY PSALMS: 69, 109, 5, 6, 11, 12, 35, 37, 40, 52, 54, 56, 57, 58, 59, 79, 83, 94, 137, 139, 143.
