Tonight’s Call – COREY SHANKLETON…RESTORATION OF THE YOUNGER GENERATION!
The Lord is a restorer and one who rehabilitates. We all have experienced seasons in our lives where we needed the Lord to intervene. Of course, it begins with becoming “Born Again – John 3:3” which gives us access to the promises of God. In the Bible, restoration is always in abundance. When something is restored, it is always better than it was to begin with. God’s promise to us is a better way., a better life, a better future for ourselves and our loved ones.
Spiritual restoration is an inner restoration. A spirit filled and felt restoration. It is a process of rebuilding those that are weak in their spiritual life. It is applied to those who have backslid away from the faith they once followed. Satan will always oppose those who are called to advance God’s Kingdom purposes. All reclaimed lives go through a time of realization of what one has done. Repentance always will follow which is a complete U-Turn. The saying goes you cannot go to Detroit and Chicago at the same time. A direction must be chosen. A time of restitution should follow where those who were wronged by you should be made aware of your new life. You must be willing to give back what was taken and ask for forgiveness. The good news ends in the process of a restoration and now being an adopted son or daughter.
Each of us have sinned which caused a breach between us and God and those around us. For many of us, this was a repeated habitual pattern in our lives. So, may we recognize where we have fallen short, repent, make restitution where possible and experience that restorative process. It is not some old cliche or overused saying that says God has a plan for your life.
“Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
“Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord but of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, be patient. In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance in the acknowledging of the truth. And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” (2 Timothy 2: 22-26)

After the death of Moses, God shows, God chose Joshua, a gifted military general, to leave His people. In short, Joshua was tasked with bringing the Israelites out of the bleak, for decades long wilderness experience marked by death and unrest and into a rich new life in Canaan, the land said to be flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 6:3). Once settled in that land, God’s desire was for His people to experience peace and rest. How fitting that Joshua’s name in Hebrew is Yeshua, which means Yahweh is salvation. Some 14 centuries later, a baby boy was born in this part of the world. The child’s name? Joshua– Yeshua– or translated into Greek, Jesus. The parallelism isn’t coincidental, God wants us to see that in the same way Joshua delivered His people from a restless existence into a place of peace and fullness, so Jesus, the new Joshua, offers to lead all those wondering and spiritual deserts everywhere (Hebrews 4:8) to a place of ultimate rest.
The historical context is important when we read that the prophet Isaiah calls God El Yeshuati. This is a variant of Yeshua, and the way of saying that God is the only God of our salvation. God’s salvation is wonderfully comprehensive. It encompasses the past, present, and future. And it includes every aspect of life. It is spiritual, to be sure– the forgiveness of sin, and imparting of new life. But it is also physical and temporal (many of the cries for deliverance in the Bible are pleas for God to rescue His people from temp oral enemies and earthly troubles). In short, we have a God who can and does bring us out of (or through) all kinds of messes: relational, occupational, emotional, social, and financial.
By calling God El Yeshuati, Isaiah reminds us of two great truths: (1) We are in desperate need of rescue; and (2) our God is the One who can provide that needed deliverance. Because His heart desires to give rest and victory, He is mighty to save and intent on liberating, redeeming, bringing out, and restoring. By focusing on El Yeshuati, we model the hope expressed in Psalm 68:20: “Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death.” When we focus on God as the author and finisher of our salvation, it drives us to be dependent on Him.
QUESTION: What wilderness experience, what long difficulty, are you experiencing? How can you persist in asking God for his salvation?
“Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; He has become my salvation.” (Isaiah 12:2)
