Tonight’s Call – UPCOMING NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER – SIGNIFICANCE!
The National Day of Prayer is an annual day of observance held on the first Thursday of May, designated by the United States Congress, when people are asked to turn to God in prayer and meditation. The president is required by law to sign a proclamation each year, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. It is an attempt to unite people through faith and peace. Several areas are usually prayed for on this very special day in our nation. They can be prayers of repentance and confession; prayers of praise and gratitude; prayers for God’s kingdom to advance on earth; prayers for families and communities; and prayers for those suffering and who are in need. There are many areas to pray into as the Holy Spirit must lead those who are in charge and facilitating that day’s event. We all must make an effort to attend proceedings whether at a state capitol, local public gatherings, or an event sponsored by churches in your area. Look upon this day as a day of opportunity.
There is value in praying in the places that we live, work or frequent. We’ve come to call the sort of on-site intercession prayer walking engagement. Certainly, this can occur while driving, biking or even simply looking at the focal place (schools, abortion clinics, police buildings, etc.) needing prayer. The main idea is called on location or on-site prayer. When praying on location and gives the Holy Spirit an opportunity to speak to our inner man and give directives what to pray into. This can be called discernment strategies.
POINT TO PONDER: We must understand spiritual warfare in a greater way in this season. There is a constant battle going on all around us even though you do not see it. There is a clashing of swords. Principalities over a region are put into place by the hearts and actions of the people in that region. The hearts and minds in that region must be changed first. Again, has the local church done its job. You can answer that! Local shepherds must rally people to a Biblical Worldview. How many times have we said…silence in the face of evil is evil itself.
Governor Witmer of Michigan recently made a declaration that the people of Michigan want abortion. We must counter that and pray for hearts and minds to change. Again, it is the silence of the local church on life in the womb, religious freedom, traditional marriage, moral depravity of the day such as the transgender issue. The spirit of abortion over a region is fueled by people’s belief systems. What voices are they constantly hearing? That fuel (voices) must be cut off before the spirit of abortion is negated in any area. This is why one of the reasons we go into the capitol is to pray for the hearts and minds of legislators to be changed.
A SEARED CONSCIENCE
Yes, there are principalities here that need to be dealt with here, but conviction of sin must come upon those legislators that say they are Christians but sear their conscience. The conscience is the God-given moral consciousness within each of us or can be referred to as our moral compass. If the conscience is seared or cauterized that it has been rendered insensitive. Such a conscience does not work properly; it’s as if spiritual scar tissue has dulled the sense of right and wrong. Just as the hide of an animal scarred with a branding iron becomes numb to further pain, so the heart of an individual with a seared conscience is desensitized to moral pangs. The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. False teachers are used as mouthpieces for evil spirits as they wear a mask of holiness but are full of falsehoods. A good conscience has the capability to tell right from wrong and is free from guilt. This individual will maintain his or her integrity no matter the cost. We must not allow ourselves to have a seared conscience in any area but as the Bible gives us instruction, we need to examine ourselves constantly.

“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! (Isaiah 5:20)

Is there a human state of mind more temperamental than confidence? You can be riding high for one minute, buoyed by verbal praise from a coworker, a raise from the boss, or a night out with a friend. And before you know what hit you, you can be feeling like a total loser, wrecked by an unkind word, or demoralized by the frustrating circumstances of the daily grind. Here’s what is undeniably true: When we depend primarily on other people or the circumstances of life for encouragement, we are headed for certain disappointment. Friends and fellow believers can be… and are supposed to be… a source of encouragement to us but even the best friends and most loyal loved ones will let us down.
Take heart. There is a better way. Deuteronomy reminds us that the most loyal, most consistent force in our lives is our God, who is near. He is with us all the time and instills in us His power, confidence, authority, and comfort. The most powerful being in the universe is always nearby. Are you facing discouraging realities? Here are some encouraging truths: God is with you even if you can’t see or feel His presence; God is all-powerful and sovereign. He’s in control even if that doesn’t seem true; God’s nature is love and His heart is good even when things don’t look that way.
Don’t look first to people or situations to lift you up. You can, at any time, even at this very second, go directly and boldly to the One who designed this amazing substance called encouragement. You can go to His Word. You can go to Him in prayer. You can lift your hands to Him and say His holy name. What better encouragement is there than all that? It’s only when we seek and trust the God who is always with us that we find the confidence we need to face life’s tough stuff.
QUESTION: In what ways can you face your current obstacles differently because you know that God is near, even if you don’t feel it?
“What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to Him.” (Deuteronomy 4:7)
