Tonight’s Call – LEARN FROM HISTORY/TYRANNY!

If you do not study history, you are doomed to repeat it. What led to the founding of this nation? The parallels of the past need to be brought into the light today. Tyranny was cast upon the people. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we need to reflect on what has given us the freedoms we enjoy today that are being severely threatened.

TYRANNY: Cruel and oppressive government; arbitrary use of power or control.

Tyranny is a cruel, harsh, and unfair government in which a person or small group of people have power over everyone else. There is an attempt to consolidate power to command and control and course others into doing what they want. Tyranny occurs when absolute power is granted to a ruler. In a tyrannical government, the ruler becomes corrupt and uses his power to further his own interests instead of working for the common good. The rule of law is cast aside so control can be obtained and rule over people. Our Constitution protects against tyranny because of separate and distinct powers of government. The three main ways that the Constitution did protect against tyranny are checks and balances, federalism, and separation of powers. We undoubtedly see more than an attempt today to control all aspects of our three branches of government.

POINT TO PONDER: The church must be the first line of defense to stop tyranny! If the modern-day Ecclesia fails, then all personal and religious freedom is lost!

BLAST FROM THE PAST – AMERICAN MINUTE!

In the 16th century, Britain’s William Laud sent spies to listen to pastors’ sermons to see if they said anything against the King’s ordinances. If any pastor violated the government’s mandates, they were arrested. The rigged trials were held in a secret government room called the “Star Chamber.” These arbitrary and oppressive inquisitions did not allow those who were arrested to have defense attorneys or meet their accusers. No witnesses were allowed.

Though the secret hearings started with the intention of cutting through the red tape of bureaucracy, Britain’s Court of Star Chamber proceeded to usurp power.

It became a political weapon for auditing, intimidating, and punishing opponents to the King’s policies, similar to modern-day IRS audits or partisan secret special counsel investigations. Individuals were subject to hostile questioning, and if they gave unsatisfactory answers, they were charged with perjury. If they did not answer for fear of self-incrimination, they were held in contempt of court. The abuses of England’s Star Chamber led America’s founders to include the Fifth Amendment in the U.S. Constitution.

Notoriously biased in favor of the King, the Star Chamber was used in 1637 by William Laud to punish religious dissenters, such as William Prynne who objected to the state’s control over religious matters. William Prynne was tied to a pillory – a public pillar – where he had his ears cut off and was branded on the cheeks with the letters “S.L.” for seditious libel, which Prynne called the “Sign of Laud.” William Laud approved of the Star Chamber’s sentence of dissenting Pastor Henry Burton for his “seditious” sermons, resulting in his ears cut off and imprisonment. When John Bastwick published religious opinions which opposed government mandates, he was brought before the Star Chamber. He, too, had his ears cut off and was thrown in prison.

“When King James died in 1625, his son Charles I ascended to the throne with the arrogance of a Roman emperor. He was the quintessential ‘divine right’ monarch. He declared martial law and suspended the rights of the individual. The king’s inquisitors at his ‘Star Chamber’ in the tower of London used torture techniques to ‘discover the taxpayer’s assets’. “A turning point in public opinion took place on January 30, 1637. Three prisoners were locked down in the pillory in London before a huge crowd …These men included a Puritan minister, a Christian writer and Dr. John Bastwick, a physician. What was their crime? They had written pamphlets disagreeing with the king’s religious views. The sheriff began by branding the men with red hot irons on the forehead with an SL for seditious libel.”

The Star Chamber forced similar fates on religious dissenter Alexander Leighton, and John Lilburn, who had coined the term “freeborn rights,” a term often cited by Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. The Star Chamber finally summoned jurors before it for verdicts disagreeable to the government, and fined and imprisoned them.

It spread terrorism among those who were called to do constitutional acts. It imposed ruinous fines.” “The tyranny of the king … finally aroused the Christian sensibilities of the people. They would no longer tolerate burnings or mutilations for matters of conscience on religious views. The persecutions drove tens of thousands of liberty loving believers to follow the Pilgrims to New England where they laid the foundation for the world’s most biblically based nation.”

Here we are today. Do you see the parallels in what we are facing in our nation today as we approach Thanksgiving Day? There will be a price to pay for freedom and many have already seen the hand of an oppressive government fall upon them. Our trust must be in God who will hear us as we make appeals to heaven. We are in a spiritual battle where the timing is in God’s hands. He is preparing the way for a Great Awakening in this game of chess where he will call out CHECKMATE.

“But thus says the Lord: even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible be delivered; for I will contend with him who contend with the one who contends with you, and I will save your sons.” (Isaiah 49:25)

“In righteousness you will be established: tyranny will be far from you; you will have nothing to fear. Terror will be far removed; it will not come near you. If anyone does attack you, it will not be my doing; whatever tax you will surrender to you. See, it is I who traded a blacksmith who fancy calls at the flame and forges a weapon fit for its work. And it is I who have created a destroyer to wreak havoc, no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me, declares the Lord. (Isaiah 54:14-17)

NAMES OF GOD SERIES – CHRISTOPHER HUDSON – ELOHIM SHAMA…THE GOD WHO HEARS!

When we think about God, it’s easy to fixate on His greatness. He is the almighty creator of the universe. He is the sovereign sustainer of all things. He is the righteous judge of the living and the dead. Such majestic attributes of power, holiness, and justice rightly fill us with reverential fear and all. But if we see God only in these ways, we may come to feel distant from Him and insignificant to Him. God is surely all these great things, but He is also a great listener. We need that perspective to– that God hears us when we cry out to Him, and that He cares personally and deeply for each of His children.

Like that faithful friend who puts all else aside when we show up with the need, God takes us by the hand, locks his gaze on us, and gives us His undivided attention. Psalm 17:6 assures us God is an active listener. But He doesn’t merely hear our words; He is also moved by the unvoiced drawings of our hearts (Romans 8:26). Is there a better picture of God’s goodness and gracious character?

Imagine you are in your car, or alone in the kitchen, mulling over a frustrating situation or an unexpected disappointment– you are headed into a hard meeting or trying to wrap your mind around some shocking news. What does the Bible say? You can talk to the one true God. More than that, through faith in Christ, you can enter the very throne room of heaven. Better than that, you can trust that in those confusing, tense, or scary moments, God will be absolutely attentive to you (Ephesians 3:12; Hebrews 10:19).

How encouraging to know that in Christ, God is completely empathetic to our human struggles (Hebrews 4:14-16). Because He knows us intimately (Psalm 139:1), because He listens attentively to us, and because He loves us perfectly, we can rest assured that He will always meet our needs (Philippians 4:19). Even when no one else seems to be paying attention, you can trust that God hears the cries of your heart.

QUESTION: how does it change your attitude about prayer to realize that your prayers always capture the full attention of God Almighty?

“God heard their groaning and He remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.” (Exodus 2:24)

“Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Psalm 17:6 new King James version. Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:9-11)

“I have called upon You, for You will hear me, O God; incline Your ear to me, and hear my speech.” (Psalm 17:6)
