Tonight’s Call – PEACE IN WAR…LANA Kristal
Our lives contain a mixture of joy and sorrow, birth and death, harmony, and conflict. Solomon in the Bible resolves that God is in control of each moment. He has a good purpose for everything we experience. Solomon stated that there is a time for war and a time for peace. The term for war in the original language refers to the waging of armed conflict against an enemy. Shalom peace is a state of harmonious relations and freedom from disputes, especially during absence of war. Shalom also describes an inner condition of total well-being. In general, “a time for war and a time for peace” could represent the spectrum of national concerns and sociopolitical conditions humans confront in life.
In ancient times, people did not wage war during harvest season. Soldiers went to battle only at specific times of the year. Today, nations go to war only in response to certain situations. Looking at the world currently in our nation we are in a state of spiritual war that is intensifying. While war can never be classified as good, Scripture reveals that God has an appointed purpose for it. In the Old Testament, the Lord at times commanded His people to go to war to bring judgment on sinful nations. War is part of the reality of living in a fallen world. Humans are flawed and sinful and war results from hatred and sin. Evil people such as Adolf Hitler make going to war inevitable and necessary to prevent even greater atrocities from being committed. Therefore, we are rising up against evil entities today through prayer and action. If we allow this to go uncontested, evil will increase.
A time for war is also associated with end times. In Matthew 24 desire cycles asked Jesus, “What will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?” Jesus answers, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom… All these are the beginning of birth pains.” On this earth, perfect peace is only found in God and preserved through having a close relationship with Him. Peace is a rewarder of those who love and obey God’s word.
God has made everything suitable for its time; and moreover, has put a sense of past and future into our minds. So as we stay the course and hold the line may the God of peace inhabit our lives.
“A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and the time of peace.” (Ecclesiastes 3:8)
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you, (Isaiah 26:3
“What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory, even us whom He called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? (Romans 9:22-24)

In multiple hot spots of the world, you can find regions known as demilitarized zones. These are sorts of no man’s land between opposing nations or armies. Though you will experience whizzing bullets in such places, you will sense a great tension. The armies aren’t fighting, yet there’s no deep sense of peace. Why? Because true peace– what the Bible calls shalom– is much more than just the absence from strife. Shalom isn’t merely the absence of conflict; is also the presence of fullness and joy, friendship, and love. In truth, Shalom is life as God meant for it to be.
During a dark time in Israel’s history, Gideon was able to lead his people in defeating the enemy Midianites. After experiencing victory, Gideon felt great peace. It was an earthly and physical peace that comes from no longer being threatened and attacked. And that was an inner and spiritual peace that came from knowing God had called, strengthened, and delivered him. He was so thankful that he built an altar and called it the Lord is Peace. How peaceful are you today? You live in a safe neighborhood where you don’t fear for your life. Or you have enough assets and income to not worry about your financial future.
Those are wonderful blessings, but there’s a whole other level of peace that God makes available to us. We can have peace with God through Jesus Christ. By faith we can go from being unforgiven enemies of God (Romans 5:10) to being God’s beloved children (John 1:12). It’s only when we enter this peace with God that we begin to experience the peace of God (Philippians 4:7). A popular bumper sticker sums it up well: “Know Jesus, Know Peace. No Jesus, no peace.” Do you know him? Ask Jehovah shalom to give you His peace, and He will give you a person, Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
QUESTION: How and when have you experienced God’s peace in your life in ways you didn’t expect?
“So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it the Lord is Peace. To this day it stands in Oprah of the Abiezrites.” (Judges 6:24)
