Tonight’s Call – COREY SHANKLETON…LEADERS FOR THE I AM!
Who is God? This question drives much of human history and is a driving force across the narrative of the Bible. After the fall of man in Genesis, mankind no longer had direct access to God, and even the people of Israel only knew certain aspects of the creator. In the Bible, we discover dozens of names and titles for God. Each one reveals some facet of God’s nature or reminds us of His care. In those names, we find new reasons to worship God, trust Him, and to praise Him more. There is one name that stands out as He is YHWH the “I AM”! The word means, the self-existent one. It’s pointing to His eternality. It’s the word for where we get the name YHWH. This name indicates that God has no beginning or no end.
To understand the power and weight of this name, compare this answer to the Egyptian pantheon. The Israelite nation lived surrounded by temples dedicated to deities with faces, bodies, birth stories, and death stories. Most significantly, they had names and dominion over certain aspects of life. For example, the goddess ISIS had dominion over women, children, and medicine. Her name identified her with specific characteristics, and she held sway only over a few elements of life. Not so for the God of Israel. So, we see the dominance of false gods in the culture the Israelites lived under. We see some parallels in the culture we live in today. So we must ingrain into our spirits who the I Am is in our present day.
In the New Testament Jesus referred this name to Himself. The religious leaders who often try to catch Jesus in heresy, and allied, or blaspheming so they could be rid of him. In John 8, the Jewish people challenged His authority, and they brought up Abraham. Jesus tells them how glad Abraham is to see the day of the Lord. When asked by the crowd how He speaks as if He knows Abraham, Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58). Jesus here is invoking the Divine name of God.
We today must understand the weight and power of the name in Exodus 3:14. It is important for today’s Christian to understand the complexity of who God is. He is all-encompassing and self-sufficient. It is a name above names, one that reminds the believer that God is in control, and that He sees His children. It also affirms the identity of the Savior as a son of God. It can be easy and the struggles of everyday life to lose sight of the majesty and holiness of God, but meditating on the name He gave Himself, and all that it represents, can help put our time on earth into perspective. God is infinite, and He is sovereign over our lives, He is Who He Is!
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58)

NAMES OF GOD SERIES – CHRISTOPHER HUDSON – YHWH…I AM!
For nearly 400 years, the children of Israel thought their God was dead– or AWOL, or on vacation. Not long after Abraham had been introduced to God, his descendants, the Hebrew people, found themselves slaves in a foreign land. A promise had been made– they would be a mighty nation and possess the land of Canaan. But the reality was that they were slaves in the land of Egypt. How could this be? God had assured them that He would be their God, and that He would never leave them. Such lavish promises seem like a cruel joke when you’re in chains and God hasn’t been heard from for centuries. They thought: God must be a myth, the story of Abraham only a legend. Obviously, we misunderstood those promises– if they ever were promises.
Moses himself may have wrestled with such doubts. Living in exile in Midian, he encountered a burning bush and, in that experience, met God first hand. God told him to go back to Egypt and lead his people to freedom. When Moses asked, “Who should I tell them sent me?” God answered,” I AM.” The meaning of I AM is powerful, even when translated into English. To say “I AM” means “I exist”. But as a name, it also suggests timelessness, self-sufficiency, changelessness.
The Israelites during the time of Moses may not have been familiar with God, but He still knew all about them. He knew they would struggle to believe in a God who can’t be seen, a God who transcends time. He knew they would be fickle and faithless, and that they would need constant rescue from the consequences of their own foolish choices. And still He set His affection on them. We are constantly asking God questions: are you able to see me? Are you wanting to know me? Are you going to help me? Are you willing to forgive me? To all our questions, God answers, “I AM”
QUESTION: When have you felt forgotten by God?
“God said to Moses, I AM who I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you” (Exodus 3:14))
