Tonight’s Call – MARK GURLEY…PROPHETIC PERSPECTIVES 2023!

There are those who are termed cessationist today in the church. They are those who believe a number of spiritual gifts ceased to exist today from the apostolic age. They believe all miracles have ceased, along with any miraculous gifts. Classical cessationist do believe that God occasionally works in supernatural ways today. They assert that the miraculous gifts such as prophecy, healing, and speaking in tongues ceased with the apostles. Are there modern day prophets?

The definition of a prophet is one who orders divinely inspired revelation; one regarded by a group of followers as the final authoritative revealer of God’s will; one gifted with more than ordinary spiritual and moral insight; one who foretells future events. The foretelling of future events was not a necessary but only an incidental part of the prophetic office. The great task assigned to the prophets whom God raised up among the people was to correct moral and religious abuses, to proclaim the great moral and religious truths which are connected with the character of God, in which lie at the foundation of his government. Simply, a prophet is a truth teller. We see in the New Testament Agabus was a prophet from Judea who came to Philip the evangelist’s house in Caesarea while Paul and his companions were staying there many days. He warned about a famine and another time the danger the apostle Paul would face. Agabus was right on both prophetic words. Should extreme caution be utilized when either demonstrating this gift or receiving it from others, because we are forewarned:

Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God for there are many false prophets in the world.” (John 4:1)

On our nightly call we play many clips on what we have considered as reliable prophetic voices. Should we judge and discern all that has been said? Yes! One aspect of any prophetic word is timing. Living in a “fast food” culture where we expect things to manifest quickly can distort one’s perception of the prophetic word that has been delivered. . This can negate God’s plan on how all is to unfold.

REVIEW THIS WORD BY THE PROPHET KIM CLEMENT REGARDING TRUMP:

We must understand when a prophetic word is released it can be a warning where the praying church can lessen the impact or delay its fruition. Or it can be a word that will come to pass as other pieces fall into place…as we prophesy in part (1 Corinthians 13:9). We must learn to understand this office, especially today as history is unfolding.

“And in these days prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch. Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar. Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. This they also did and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.” (Acts 11: 27-30)

And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. When he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’Now when we heard these things, both we and those from that place pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul answered, “What do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. So when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, “The will of the Lord be done.” (Acts 21: 10-14)

“In the last days, God said, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.” (Acts 2:17-18)

One night Nebuchadnezzar, the ancient Babylonian king and conqueror of Judah, had a troubling dream. Upset and worried, he summoned his top Wiseman. Nebuchadnezzar knew being a consultant was a very subjective business that often involved more speculation than fact (especially since no one likes to give bad news to powerful people), so he decided to raise the stakes. Before hearing his advisors spout various opinions about the meaning of his dream, he first makes them state the facts of the dream. Only someone with the divine hotline could have such details, right? Failure to do so would result in termination and extermination.

Understandably, Nebuchadnezzar’s advisors panicked. Who can read another’s mind, even under the threat of death– especially under the threat of death? Enter Daniel, the Jewish prophet and worshiper of the one true God. Knowing that God is the revealer of mysteries, Daniel was unfazed by the king’s edict. He assured all who would listen that God is powerful enough to give dreams, read minds, and interpret cryptic, mystical revelations. Sure enough, aided and empowered by God, Daniel revealed things only God could have known. Life is full of mysteries. What does tomorrow hold? Will I get to keep my current job? How will our children turn out? Will the cancer return? Will my marriage every month improve? Only God knows these things. What we know– and what we can trust– is that God will reveal what we need to know, when we need to know it.

QUESTION: To which questions about your future would you like answers? How does it comfort you to know that God already knows what is to come?

“But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come.” (Daniel 2:28)
