Tonight’s Call – HANG TOGETHER OR HANG SEPARATELY!

Benjamin Franklin coined the phrase we must all hang together
or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.

Hanging together meant to support one another’s efforts in this context, and hanging separately referred to the likely end up on a gallows, if they did not. He knew the colonies must unite to have any chance of independence and act as one nation, or else face certain defeat by the British in the Revolutionary war. In difficult times when all the odds are against you, we must stick together if we are going to prevail to maintain freedom. Benjamin Franklin made the statement at the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

If people hang together, they help each other and work together to achieve something: if the opposition can hang together, they will prevail over disunity. He also stated the most acceptable service of God is doing good to man. He also firmly believed in having a concrete plan of action when facing each day or any situation that would arise. He always argued for American liberty abroad and at home. Franklin was also known for his temperance and coolness and clearness of head in times of pressure or stress.

So here we are today in a fight for personal and religious freedom. Men and women pioneers are forging ahead at great cost at times to preserve a future for our children and grandchildren. The body of Christ is the answer for us to obtain the ultimate victory. The unity of the church is vital for our endurance. Were not meant to live the Christian life in isolation. And is vital for our witness; Jesus authorized the unbelieving world to judge whether or not the father sent him into the world based on the church is visible unity (John 17:21). Our unity at this time is crucial because it provides strength, power, and courage. When people come together, they can achieve more than they could individually. Unity is often seen in the workplace, where team members work together to complete the task. It is also seen in local communities where people come together to help each other. God blesses unity as is stated in Psalm 133.

This month of August will see a clashing of light versus darkness. We must get behind those who are attempting to be protectors of our freedom. There are always those who run ahead on the front lines. All others must be a support for them. Remember the story in the word where the Amalekites were fighting the Israelites. Whenever Moses will lift up his arms the Israelites would prevail in battle. As he became tired and began to lower his arms Aaron and Hur stepped in to support his arms to gird him up and the battle was one. They put a ROCK under his arms. We can depend on the Rock…Jesus Christ as our supporting foundation as we engage in this spiritual war. Unity is key for us to obtain the victory.

Stay the course and hold the line!

“Can two walk together except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3)

“Again, I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:19-20)

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one spirit. Just as you are called to one hope when you are called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. ” (Ephesians 4: 3-6)

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

“And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided shall not stand” (Matthew 12:25).
