Tonight’s Call Offense and Disunity
DIVISION AND OFFENSES WILL ALWAYS DESTROY FAMILIES, THE CHURCH AND EVENTUALLY A NATION*
This topic is critical for us to survive as a nation. The whole atmosphere is charged with disunity caused by biases that we are all prone to carry. There is a standard that is the remedy, and it is the Word of God. We must be more than hearers but doers.
BIAS: Prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair: Bias is often characterized as stereotypes about people based on the group to which they belong and/or based on an immutable physical characteristic they possess, such as their gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. This type of bias can have harmful real-world outcomes. People may or may not be aware that they hold these biases. It makes people vulnerable to misinformation. Then pride works into the scenario of bias. When somebody makes a strong stand on an issue they close off information that could prove them wrong. It is usually a pride issue. Humility is one of the answers. If not dealt with a stronghold is formed which can lead to hardened hearts.
“The first one to plead his cause seems right, Until his neighbor comes and examines him.Casting lots causes contentions to cease, And keeps the mighty apart.A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a castle.” (Proverbs 18: 17-19)
STRONGHOLD: A stronghold is an incorrect thinking pattern that has molded itself into our way of thinking. These strongholds have the capability to affect our feelings, how we respond to various situations in life, and they play a large role in our spiritual freedom.
- What does the Bible say about spiritual strongholds? A stronghold is defined as ” A place that has been fortified so as to protect it against attack; A place where a particular cause or belief is strongly defended or upheld. Strongholds are designed to be a safe place. As believers in Christ, we need to make the Lord our stronghold.
” For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, ” (2 Corinthians 10: 3-5)
NOTE: Bias and strongholds set us up for disunity. This is the spiritual attack against the church today. Whatever cultural gateway we are called to enter into we must expect this attack from Satan.
“But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” [Matt 12:25]
“For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!” [Gal 5:14-15]
Envy, self-seeking, personal ambitions destroys unity in our diversity!
“But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” (James 3 15-18)
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9}
Point to ponder: – Offenses destroy unity of the Church and will ultimately weaken it to make it ineffective! Offense is one of the main obstacles of unity! Understanding how this causes division is a key to correct this problem.
OFFENSE: It is displeasure; anger, an act of wickedness or omission of duty. It is any transgression of law, divine or human; a crime; or sin. It can also be a cause of stumbling.
ASK QUESTIONS:
1. How many of us have ever been offended?
2. Can you remember the emotions and attitudes that rose up within you?
3. Have you ever offended anyone?
4. Do you remember the people who took sides whether for or against you?
NOTE: These situations can drain us emotionally many times and can bring on wounds and hurts in the spirit of man. They leave us with many hurtful memories and breached relationships.
Point to ponder: Offenses can split churches; divide ministries; and relationships between family and friends. Offense is an enemy of unity. Love is the only remedy where we allow no bitter root to take hold of us [Heb. 12:15].
- BITTERNESS: is that state of mind that willfully holds on to angry feelings, ready to take offense, able to break out in anger at any moment. The foremost danger in succumbing to bitterness and allowing it to rule our hearts is that it is a spirit that refuses reconciliation.
- “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;” (Hebrews 12: 14-15)
***WHY WOULD THE ENEMY OF OUR SOULS ATTEMPT TO BRING OFFENSES? ***
Point to ponder: Offenses breed jealousies, competition, strife, and issues of control. If we can grasp the totality of what forgiveness is and that all people are subject to error and mistakes – the body of Christ will come together as one. We must learn to bless people and love unconditionally, as we walk in humility.
“Now John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us. But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is on our side.” [Luke 9:49-51]
Point to ponder: If it is painful for you to criticize someone, you are usually safe in doing it. If you take pleasure in it, hold your tongue.
WE MUST DENY OURSELVES AND WALK IN FORGIVENESS…RESTORATION AND RECONCILIATION – BLESSING PEOPLE!
“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?” [Luke 9:23-26]
“Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” [Phil 2:1-8]
“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” [Matt 6:14-16]
POINT TO PONDER: Satan works in false leadership, and he is cunning and crafty as smooth as snakes’ skin. These smooth leaders can release just enough venom where you cannot quite grasp what it is that is bothering you, but in using their smooth monotone words are like clockwork. For under their tongue is the venom of a forked tongued asp.

Topay it forward simply means to repay a kindness received with a good deed to someone else. How many have witnessed the gospel and prayed for each of us to be saved?
